McCarren Park (By Ericsson Playground, on Leonard St btwn Manhattan Ave & Bayard St)

Getting the word out about one of our upcoming team races, the McCarren 5K on May 7.

For those new to the club or unfamiliar with this particular event, the McCarren Park 5K is OUR RACE, that we help sponsor and organize with a community charity partner, St. Nick’s Alliance and NYCRuns. The race takes place on our home turf – we plan it, we throw it, we run it, we WIN it.

While still a couple months out from race day, we are starting the call for VOLUNTEERS to help put on another great McCarren 5K this year. Volunteer positions are available for race marshaling, manning water tables and running an NBR recruitment table. We have our sites set on putting together a fantastic NBR volunteer squad of around 35 people. Please sign-up here to assist:

And for all our 5K racers, registration is now open via this race registration link.  But wait, there is more…

All members of North Brooklyn Runners are offered a discounted $25 race fee – please follow this link to our google group for the registration code. (you must be logged in.)

We look forward to another great team showing and fun race alongside our community in May!

LYScotland10K2016 (11)

Looking back on my life 365 days ago, I never would have thought I would call myself a runner. I couldn’t grasp why people would voluntarily wake up at the crack of dawn for early morning races on the weekends.

However, one day my personal trainer convinced me that running a couple times a week would improve my health tremendously. I begrudgingly agreed. I hated running almost as much as I hated waking up early, but I soon discovered that my hatred for running eventually turned into love, a desire; something I longed to do everyday.

When I finally worked up the nerve to make it to one of NBR’s runs, I was astonished at the amount of support I received. I mean, c’mon, y’all are fast. What was I thinking hanging out with a bunch of seasoned marathoners?

I ran my first 5k in June 2015, my first 10k in October 2015, and my first 15k in December 2015. In January of this year, training for a marathon and completing NYRR’s 9+1 program became my top resolution.

I trained hard all winter. I started running 5 days a week. I signed up for a bunch of races. However, I was stuck in a pace rut. I was PRing less and less and starting to feel frustrated.

Yesterday I ran the Scotland Run. It was my third 10k, and I’m happy to report that I crushed my first 10k time by 3 whole minutes. The weather was crappy; rainy and humid, and there are so many reasons to be unhappy during a race like that. But I didn’t give up, I kept on trucking because no matter the outcome, I knew I was eventually going to cross the finish line and meet up with so many sweaty, smiling faces of NBR.

Yes, some of my personal successes have been because of my training, but I credit the majority of it to NBR. You, teammates, inspire me every single day, and I am so happy to be a part of this huge, crazy, awesome, talented group of runners. Such camaraderie between new runners and lightning fast veterans isn’t something you see everyday. Waking up early for runs, races, and cheering squads has become my favorite way to spend a weekend.

I’m still not a fast runner, and I might never make it to NYRR’s “A” corral, but I am definitely getting stronger. I’m seeing a difference in my form, stamina, and speed. With each race I run with NBR, my confidence to achieve great things increases.

There’s no feeling like being exhausted, cranky, and ready for a race to be over until you pass by your team’s cheerleaders and hear the “woohoos” from your fellow teammates. I am so happy to be a part of this team. Congrats to all our Scotland runners and serious hugs to our cheer squad! You rock.

10 of our 81 finishers

On Sunday, March 7, North Brooklyn Runners kicked off the 2016 Club Points race schedule with a bang! 81 of our runners participated in the Washington Heights 5k, with several more cheering and volunteering. Our men’s and women’s open teams both placed in the Top 5 of all New York Road Runner squads and our Masters men & women both placed in the top 20! Several runners set all-time records for the club.

We started our day with early morning meetups at the Bedford Ave L and Grand Army Plaza 2 trains and made our way uptown. Some runners kept warm in the armory pre-race, while others embraced the brisk 30 degree temperatures with some outdoor warm-ups. Peter Ciaccia confirmed clearance on the roadway and got us off to a prompt start at 9:00.

Earlier in the week, Coach James Chu gave some team-wide advise (via the NBR newsletter) in how best to approach the hilly Washington Heights 5k course. He suggested not starting out too strong, and taking it easy on the hills that it was best to save our energy for the run back from Fort Tryon. I personally have embraced “starting out too strong” as my life philosophy, therefore took Coach Chu’s advice to heart with my own spin on it. Having run the race last year, I decided to give it my all at every flat and downhill portion of the course, taking it easy on the many hills. I did start strong and then hit my fastest pace as we entered Fort Tryon Park on the longest and steepest downhill of the course. I also did my best to kick hard into the finish as we ran under the Cross Bronx Expressway Bridge. This strategy helped my hit my 5K personal record by a slim 3 seconds on the tough, hilly course. (24:42 finish.)

With so much great NBR energy on race day, we are CONFIDENT the team will continue to be contenders throughout 2016. A good time was had by all, including at post-race brunch organized by our fabulous social committee, at Croxley’s sports bar in Williamsburg.

Great work team! See you at the Scotland Run!

Super Challenge BBQ

Saturday August 1st, 2015
1 PM
Cooper Park
Maspeth & Olive Sts

————————————————————

Youse guys, Saturday is Team Champs!  That means NBR’s Men and Women will be going all out for a race just for the local running clubs, and it’s awesome!   If you’re running it, amazing!  If you’re cheering at it, you’re the best!  If you’re not attending the post race Brunch/BBQ/Field Day Super Challenge extravaganza, fogetaboutit!

So here’s the deal.  Men and Women race separately in this one, so let’s keep the battle of the sexes alive at the brunch with some friendly competition.  This isn’t just some arm wrestling we are talking about.  Its half field day, half grill-off, half bake-off, half the calories (that’s a lot of halves).  They’ll be a series of challenges that will all score you points for your team.  This will include some classic field day events, some things we’ll just make up, a grill off and of course a bake off.  Winning gender gets bragging rights and will hold the title of NBR’s Superior Sex for one year.

So bake some goods in preparation, and bring some food to share for the BBQ.  We’ll be lighting up the grills around 1pm at Cooper Park (even if you’ve never heard of it, i’m sure you’ve run past it, its in our hood people).

If you want to sign up to bring something to the BBQ (this way we don’t have 10 chips and no salsa) use this the link on our google group post here.

Sign up for the actual events will be done Saturday at the BBQ.  If you plan on entering the Grill Off or the Bake Off, come prepared!
