NBRSuperFriendsHappyHour

It’s a crazy month for a lot of people and it’s finally winding down! after all the super hard work everyone’s been doing, we’re going to have a super cool down session next week and give everyone a chance to kick up those blistered heels. come join us at Spritzenhaus after 7:30 for some not running. or go heat up first at the 7:30pm track workout and THEN come over for some not running!

This is a chance for the team to get together and just chill and chat. there’s a lot of new members, a lot of old members, and a lot of team mates that we just don’t see very often because they run at different times or different locations. the google group lurkers can take it next level and lurk from just a few feet away.

We’ll be at spritzenhaus after 7:30pm, off to the left from the main doors. i promise there will be no krytonite, but things might get a little bizzaro.

April 16th 2015
Thursday – 7 PM – 9PM

Spritzenhaus
33 Nassau Ave & Guernsey St

Come out this Thursday to meet some new friends, say hi to old ones, enjoy a lovely evening, and prob have a ton of fun!

Also, we will have a giant box full of live kittens that you can climb into and snuggle with! See below for more details…

nmhhspring2015

It’s warming up outside, and people are back on the streets enjoying the beautiful running weather… what a perfect time to mix and mingle and meet the rest of the team! Join us next Thursday April 16th at Spritzenhaus 7-9pm+ to catch the name of that person you’ve been running next to but never ask.

If you’ve never come to a run before but have been thinking about it, this is a great opportunity to meet some other team mates. If you’ve been around for a while, this is great chance to see people you never see because they’re always at different runs than you. NBR is less of a team and more of big group of friends who happen to run together. This event is aimed at meeting some of the many new members, as catching everyone’s names can be a little tough when we’re huffing and puffing!

As the annual NBR Track Meet is coming up soon, with it’s many fun relay races, we’ll also help form relay teams! There’s a lot of people interested who don’t have solid teams lined up, so come put your name down and we’ll help hook it up! Then you can meet your new team and start practicing your secret handshake.

BUT you should register NOW before the price goes up after April 12th!

The track meet is a LOT of fun, even if you’ve never done any track events – you don’t need to have any track experience, just a desire to join in on a local fun event and two feet! There’s lots of prizes to be had, and they’re not all based on times (eg: best team name award).

So join us at Spritzenhaus from 7-9pm+ on Thursday April 16th for a drink, meet some new friends, find a relay team, and share your love of kittens. There’s no formal speaking points, but there will be lots of people there who can answer any questions you have. Bring cash/card, your ID, and smiles 🙂

New Memeber Coordinators

**Note: there is no actual box full of kittens – it’s really just the sidewalk and you drank too much. Those aren’t kittens you’re cuddling, it’s 30 pieces of sidewalk gum (if you’re lucky!)

August 6th 2014,  Wednesday – 7:30 PM
 Northern Territory12Franklin St 11222

Join your teammates for a New Member Happy Hour on April 26th. We’ll be in the backyard at Beloved starting at 6:30 PM.

Hello there all you new pups! Have you been lurking in the Google Group but never been to a run? Do you not know what a fartlek is? Have you been to a couple of runs but never had a chance to really meet anyone?

NewMemberHH2014

NBR would like to welcome you to the pack with a happy hour geared especially for those who have recently joined, are thinking about joining, or have been here for years but still don’t know how to use the website! Everyone is welcome to join us on the rooftop of Northern Territory next Wednesday Aug 6th from 7:30 to 9:30/10.

This will be a great opportunity to: meet other new runners; meet some of the veterans; ask any questions you may have about the website, gear, races, tips, or any ol’ thang; or just talk about how awesome the neighborhood is and how smelly Newton Creek is! Seriously, it’s stinky.

You can come straight from home or work, but you can also join in one of the evening road runs and head over with some of the group after that. There is a 7pm Beginners Run (2mi), and a 7:30pm Road Run (intermediate, ~5mi). People will be walking over to the Happy Hour from both of these runs.

We don’t care if you’re sweaty, dressed to the 9’s, old, new, or if you’re stinkier than Newton Creek, we just want to get a chance to say hi! We look forward to seeing you there!

On why you should volunteer – 2014 NYRR NYC Half Volunteer Report by nbrwebjohn
March 16, 2014, 8:30 pm
Filed under: Events, Inspiration, Members, NBR Goings On, New Members, Volunteering

On why you should volunteer

Let me start by saying this is not a sponsored post by the volunteers group. I’ve written it voluntarily, without even being asked: how’s that for volunteer spirit? So these are just my thoughts now my fingers and toes have thawed out from this morning’s efforts at the NYC half marathon water table.

NBR at NYC Half Water Table 2014-03-16 (24)

“Don’t be fooled anyone, the sun hit our spot for a grand total of 5 minutes.”

The facts are simple – we showed up at 6am, it was stunningly cold. We set up tables, and flags, and gatorade banners, the wind howled, the cups blew around (no kidding at one point there was a howling cup vortex blowing round the legs of the lead runners), we got very wet pouring water (and sticky from gatorade), we froze, we cheered, we cleared everything up, we went home and slept for hours and thawed out gradually.

Was that fun? Am I about to tell you that was fun?

Well. No. It’s not specifically fun. There are fun parts – like when Mo Farrah runs past, or when Jose yells through his megaphone, or when there’s a big cheer for a passing NBR runner, or when you can encourage those at the back of the field and point out the mile 12 marker. But that probably adds up to about 10 minutes of fun in the 6 hrs that you’re out there. This isn’t a pitch about ‘volunteering is so fun, you should give it a try’.

NBR at NYC Half Water Table 2014-03-16 (30)

So why should you volunteer?

OK I think it’s like running. I mean how much of running is actually fun? Not the social stuff, not the hanging out before or after, or the commenting on facebook – I mean the actual running part of running? What’s the ratio of grinding, panting, painful, one foot in front of the other survival running, to the free as a bird, ah the joys of movement, look at me I’m alive, running? It’s about 90:10, right? I mean you endure the hard stuff to get to the good stuff, you do hill repeats in the dark on the stupid W’burg bridge, because at some point you’re on vacation and you want to run up a big hill and look at the ocean, you do core because… ok I don’t do core. But it’s good for you, you should do core.

But on the fun side, there’s so much great stuff. We belong to what I think we can all agree is the best club in NYC – an amazing community of great people. And as a community look at the good times we have – the gala, the bridge runs, the brunches, the hanging out, the community gardening days and so on. So – mathematical proof coming up – if you flip the ratio above, then that’s the 90%. The remaining 10% is the volunteering in the cold, and the wet, and the gatorade.

Volunteering at the NYC half, and the NYC marathon, and the Brooklyn marathon is us paying our dues to the community of New York running. It’s not fun in and of itself, but it’s worthwhile, and we need to do it as a club. I haven’t done the maths, but if everyone volunteered once a year (that’s in addition to doing your +1 volunteering) we would have way more volunteers than we actually need. So in fact you only need to intend to do it once a year, and then do it every 18 months say, and then you’ve done your bit.

NBR at NYC Half Water Table 2014-03-16 (33)

Also, best way of meeting other people in NBR bar none. Not kidding on this one. On the runs you only meet people who run the same pace as you, that’s about 5% of the group. FACT. (OK, I realise there’s a lot of bogus maths in this blog). But at the water table, all are equal. Except Jose – he has a megaphone.

So volunteer. It’s really great. Not fun. But great.
